The Nobel Prize 2020 in Physics field award goes to three scientists: Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez for their excellent work for Blackhole formation and the discovery of the Blackhole in the centre of the Galaxy.

Roger Penrose is a British Mathematical Physicist at Oxford University, his share in the formation of Blackhole which makes him won the Nobel is for using ingenious mathematical tools to prove that the formation of black holes which are predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez are German and American scientists respectively, They are honored for their work in which they turned Telescope on our own galaxy and discovered that there is a blackhole present in the center of the Milky Way.

Nobel Prize 2020 in Physics

Today on 6 October 2020, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences presented the 114th Award in the field of Physics and awarded the three winners with the prize of 10 Million Swedish kronor (£870,000), which will be shared among the winners, the half prize will be going to Penrose while the other half will be shared between Genzel and Ghez for their work in Blackhole Formation.

“This year’s laureates have uncovered secrets in the darkest corner of our universe. But this is not just an old adventure coming to its triumphant conclusion, it is a new one beginning. As we probe ever closer to the horizons of the black holes, nature might have new surprises in store,” said Ulf Danielsson, the professor of theoretical physics at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Andrea Ghez is only the fourth woman to be honored with the award of Nobel Prize in Physics. The wordings from her while receiving the award is “I hope I can inspire other young women into the field. It is a field that has so many pleasures, and if you are passionate about the science there is so much that can be done”.

The announcement of the winners was delayed said by the committee due to the delay in contact with the winners. Dr. Ziri Younsi of University College London also expresses his views on Nobel Prize 2020 in Physics award he said “Black holes are fascinating and enigmatic objects. It is wonderful to see the fundamentally important theoretical and observational work of these laureates recognized by the Nobel committee”.

Yesterday on Monday the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology awarded to the three scientists Harvey J Alter, Charles M Rice, and Michael Houghton for the discovery of the Virus Hepatitis C.

The next award for the Nobel prize in chemistry will be announced tomorrow on Wednesday by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
